The Disney Dream

In 1965, Walt Disney was on the lookout for the perfect location for his next theme park. Following the monumental success of Disneyland in California, he envisioned creating a second park that would incorporate the beauty of the Florida landscape. Several sites were considered, but the Sandestin area was particularly appealing due to its pristine beaches, stunning sunsets, and abundant land. At one point, Disney even scouted the area for its potential to attract millions of tourists.

However, the plans eventually fell through, and Disney opted for a site in Orlando, which would become Walt Disney World Resort. This decision not only shaped the future of the theme park industry but also left Sandestin to develop into a unique destination of its own, characterized by its natural beauty and recreational offerings.

The Evolution of Sandestin

Following Disney's decision, Sandestin began its transformation. In 1973, the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort was established, marking the area’s growth into a prominent vacation spot. The resort introduced luxury accommodations, world-class golf courses, and a variety of amenities that appealed to families and couples alike. Over the decades, Sandestin continued to flourish, welcoming visitors drawn by its emerald waters and white sandy beaches. The community expanded with shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment options, while maintaining the charm and natural beauty of the area. The creation of the Village of Baytowne Wharf added a vibrant hub for dining, shopping, and nightlife, solidifying Sandestin's status as a desirable Northwest Florida destination.
